SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT THAT THE VOTERS SHOULD PROVE THEIR IDENTITY AT THE

POLLING STATIONS

 

It is essential that the voter must prove his identity at the polling station by a photo-identity card at the Presidential Election due to be held on 26.01.2010. The following identity documents will be accepted for this purpose.

1. National Identity Card issued by Department of Registration of Persons.

2. Valid Passport.

3. Valid Driving Licence.

4. Government Pensioner's Identity Card.

5. Elder's Identity Card.

6. Identity Card issued to the Clergy by the Department of Registration of Persons.

7. The temporary identity card issued through the Department of Elections for the previous Provincial Council Elections. (These card will be-revalidated and re-issued to the holders though Grama Niladharis).

02. Any person who is not in possession of any one of the above-mentioned identity documents, should obtain a temporary identity card issued by the Department of Elections. Similarly, if the identity document is illegible, faded or the photograph is discoloured should obtain the temporary identity card. Office identity cards issued by the Ministries and Departments will not be accepted.

03. The temporary identity card will be issued by the Grama Niladhari or the Superintendents of Estate. Applicants should meet the Grama Niladhari or the Superintendent of the Estate with two copies of his recently taken colour or black and white photograph of the size 1 1/4 " x 1". The applicant should perfect an application form which would be available with the Grama Niladhari or the Superintendent of Estate and hand it over with the photograph. No fee will be charged for the temporary identity card.

03. The last date for receipt of appications is 15th January, 2010. The Completed identity card will be handed over to the applicant before the date of poll after it is certified by the Deputy/ Senior Assistant/ Assistant Commissioner of Elections of the relevant district. Identity cards without the prescribed certificate will not be accepted.

04. In addition to that above mentioned identity documents, a temporary identity that would be issued by the Department of Registration of Persons will also be accepted. An annoucement would be made by that Department regarding the temporary identity card. No other identity card, other than those specified above will be accepted. Voters who do not prove their identity will not be issued with a ballot paper.
